Description

The company he founded in the 1990s, Patrick Eggle Guitars, first based in Coventry and then in Birmingham, is known for designing and releasing such guitar ranges as the Berlin (1991) and the Fret King Espirit (1998). The company was producing 2,000 electric and acoustic guitars per year by the mid-1990s.

Eggle’s guitars have been used by artists such as Tony Iommi, Brian May, Bruce Watson, Bill Nelson, Midge Ure, Tony Remy, Oliver Leiber, and Ali and Robin Campbell On 11 April 2014, the “JS Berlin Legend” made for Rory Gallagher sold for £25,000 at auction.

Eggle left the company in 1994, and moved to the USA to begin trading independently building acoustic and archtop guitars. In 2004 he returned to the UK, and started producing acoustic guitars from workshops in Oswestry under the brand name Patrick James Eggle Guitars. Notable artists of these guitars include guitarists such as Jake Bugg and Frank Turner. Turner played his custom made PJE guitar during his performance at the 2012 Summer Olympics.

The Blue Book Says:

The Berlin model was voted the Making Music British Guitar of the Year award in 1995.
2012 Limited Edition Berlin Models include the Classic ’91 (priced from £3,515), which is a revival of the exact specs of the original classic – handmade exactly the same way using the original patterns and tools, the Berlin National Trust (priced from £2,500) is made with British Timber sourced from the ‘National Trust’ properties, using trees from their protected woodlands which need to be felled for safety reasons. As the leading UK guitar manufacturer we are priviledged to offer these unique guitars worldwide, and the Berlin LP 58 Custom (Priced from £3,399) is a new departure for Patrick Eggle as the first single cutaway Berlin with stunning sounds and warmth to rival vintage 1958 guitars. Each model is hand-carved and a limited edition of just 10 of each variation.

I Say:

Wow – really surprised by this – the build quality and tonality are fantastic.

The original pickups (which were notoriously unremarkable Kent Armstrong pickups) have been replaced with a Dimarzio DP186BK “The Cruiser” dual rail pickup in the neck position – this gives a bright clean and airy tone, A pickup labelled R1 – which I suspect is an Ibanez/Dimarzio standard pickup vintage cloth braided style pickup – quite punchy and great in combination with the neck pickup, and a PRS HFS hum bucker in the bridge position – which does what you’d expect from a PRS pickup – tight, bright and punchy.

The 5 way pickup selector gives neck, neck and middle, middle, out of phase and bridge only options.

The headstock shows some signs of use a few minor chips and dents.  Sperzel locking tuners.

The neck seems pretty un marked Ebony fingerboard and wide low frets show little – if any – signs of wear.

The body has one major ding on the rear upper bass bout (pictured), the front has a few minor chips, but nothing too unsightly.  The Wilkinson V100 trem is great and has the locking trem included.

It sounds great, looks great, and rivals any of the PRS, Fender and Gibson guitars I’ve had for tone and playability.  Fantastic.
