2011 Lakland 44-01 Bass – Black

The Blue Book Says:

Instruments currently built in Chicago, IL since 1994. The Skyline Series is produced overseas.

Lakland began in 1994 with a bass guitar designed by bass trader Dan Lakin and luthier Hugh McFarland. It began offering high quality, custom-built electric bass guitars with distinctly American aesthetics and an exceptionally smooth, supple feeling neck. The Lakland USA Series basses are 100% made in the U.S.A. In 2002, Lakland introduced the Skyline Series, based on the USA Series designs, but produced over seas. All Skyline Series instruments are brought to the Lakland factory in Chicago, IL where Lakland technicians add their own in-house made US pickups and electronics, apply PLEK technologies fret leveling service and perform final set up along side the U.S. built counterparts. For more information, please visit Lakland’s website. Lakland is a registered trademark of Lakland Guitars, LLC.

I say:

Taken in Part-ex on a Les Paul I sold, this Bass is almost brand new – it’s only seen “showroom use” no gigging.  The Black gloss body is in super clean condition, with only the very lightest of marks from polishing/cleaning.

The bass is made from American designs, assembled in the East, and then the final setup and adjustment occurs in Chicago USA – effectively a USA made bass at a reduced price due to the savings on labour costs!  This is even detailed in the transfer on the rear of the neck – as seen in the pictures.

A nice – medium weight, Jazz styled bass.  The two Bartolini Mk1 pickups give a clear and incisive sound with plenty of punch.  Add to this 3 band centre detented active tone controls, and you can dial in pretty much any bass sound that you want!  The other two knobs are a volume and centre detented blend switch for any conceivable mix of Neck and Bridge Pickups.  Then – pull up on the volume knob and it disengages the tone controls – providing a flat EQ instantly!

Structurally the guitar is well balanced, and feels like it has a wider neck than the Jazz Basses I remember – Upper fret access is a dream due to the excellent cutaway and heel construction.

Currently this does not have a hard case, but one is on order, or there’s the pictured rather cool Lakland DOUBLE bass case – meaning that it’ll take two basses, not that it’ll take a double bass 🙂

These have a RRP of £699, but they have no gig bag/case.
